The Herndon Police Department is seeking experienced law enforcement professionals who are ready to take the next step in their careers and join our team as a Police Sergeant.

This position serves as a first line supervisor and combines hands on law enforcement responsibilities with leadership, personnel supervision, and operational oversight. Sergeants supervise and direct personnel, respond to and assume command of significant incidents, review reports and cases, coordinate operational activities, support employee performance and development, and help ensure the effective delivery of police services. Sergeants may also have opportunities to serve in specialized assignments or functions, includingtraffic, investigations, training/recruitment, and other authorized areas.

Minimum Qualifications:

At least 5 years of certified law enforcement experience
At least 1 year of prior supervisory experience
High school diploma or GED
Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record
United States citizenship
Associate degree or higher strongly preferred
Virginia DCJS instructorships strongly preferred

Qualified law enforcement officers from outside Virginia may also be considered but must be able to complete the required Virginia lateral law enforcement training and Herndon Police Department field training requirements.
